serge

Serge Ponsar was a French-born musician who released one LP in 1983 called Back to the Light. His lone full-length belongs on a short list of '80s funk LPs that are solid start to finish. No need to get off the couch after one song to yank the needle off a sleepy slow jam. "Out in the Night" is one of the best tracks on his album and fortunately saw a 12" release cut nice and loud at 45rpm. This tune has a tough bass line and a certain French smoothness that work really well together.

Whats really odd about the Serge Ponsar 'Back To The Light' album is just how 'smooth' it is considering the people involved in making it, namely John Luongo who I am sure needs no introduction on this blog, then there is the legendary French space-prog-disco artist and producer duo Jean-Pierre Massiera and his half-brother Bernard Torelli and finally a mysterious woman called Marie-Pierre who put out a Dennis Bovell produced album on Trojan Records here in the UK circa 1977.

John Luongo mixed the album and the singles that came off it, Bernard Torelli played guitar and along with J.P. Massiera and Marie-Pierre wrote most of the songs (though not 'Out In The Night' posted here).

I have been into Luongo and Massiera/Torelli's work for ages so when I heard about this collaboration I fell on my knees and thanked the great musical god in the sky only to really disappointed that it wasn't a total sonic avant-garde freak-festival, in fact the total opposite is true...BUT! it has kind of grown on me with repeated listens and glad to see someone else appreciates it.
